Safety in engineering design can be achieved through several structured studies such as:
🔹 HAZID (Hazard Identification): A proactive study conducted at the early design phase to identify potential hazards related to equipment, layout, or operating conditions. The objective is to foresee what could go wrong before detailed engineering begins, allowing effective risk elimination or mitigation strategies to be built into the design.
🔹 HAZOP (Hazard and Operability): A systematic and detailed review of process design, examining possible deviations from intended operation (e.g., “no flow,” “high pressure,” “low temperature”) and their consequences. HAZOP ensures both safety and operability are maintained, safeguarding people, assets, and production continuity.
🔹 SWIFT (Structured What-If Technique): A semi-structured, brainstorming-based study that uses “what-if” questions to explore potential failures, abnormal situations, or human errors. It encourages creative thinking and team collaboration, often used as a quicker yet effective alternative to full HAZOPs for lower-risk systems.
These methods form the backbone of safe engineering practices, enabling us to deliver designs that protect people, assets, and the environment.
