Automation of Engineering Data Extraction at Major National Oil & Gas Company in Oman

MECIP is currently executing the Automation of Engineering Data Extraction Project through DIGATEX™, leveraging advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and intelligent document processing technologies to accelerate engineering digitalization and asset information management.
The project is focused on transforming large volumes of engineering drawings, technical documents, and legacy plant information into structured, intelligent, and data-centric digital assets. Through the application of AI-powered recognition, extraction, validation, and quality assurance technologies, MECIP is helping establish a robust digital foundation that enhances engineering data accessibility, accuracy, governance, and lifecycle management.
A key component of the project involves the automation of Red Line Mark-Up (RLMU) Management, including electronic document stamping, management of Site Technical Queries (STQs), consolidation of multidisciplinary mark-ups, and automated conversion of Approved For Construction (AFC) drawings into As-Built documentation. The solution supports improved document control, engineering workflow efficiency, and asset information integrity.
The project also incorporates advanced Defect Detection and Quality Assurance modules, utilizing intelligent recognition technologies to identify engineering symbols, extract critical data, and perform automated quality checks on engineering documentation. These capabilities significantly reduce manual effort while improving data consistency and reliability.
In support of digital engineering transformation initiatives, MECIP is converting legacy Process Engineering Flow Schemes (PEFS), Utility Engineering Flow Schemes (UEFS), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) into intelligent, data-centric engineering models. Existing AutoCAD, PDF, and other document formats are being transformed into modern digital engineering platforms, enabling enhanced information management and future digital twin applications.
The project further includes engineering datasheet standardization, data extraction, enrichment, and information normalization, creating a unified and searchable engineering information environment. Upon completion, the initiative will provide the client with enhanced engineering data quality, improved operational efficiency, streamlined asset lifecycle management, and a scalable platform for future digital transformation and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
This project demonstrates MECIP’s and DIGATEX™’s capabilities in delivering next-generation Engineering Information Intelligence, Digital Asset Management, and AI-driven automation solutions for large-scale energy and industrial facilities.
