Calandria Improvement Project at Major Chemical Company in Kertih

MECIP was awarded the Provision of Basic Engineering Design (BED) and Associated Simulation, Calculation, Study, Assessment and Reporting for a Calandria Improvement Project at a major chemical manufacturing facility in Malaysia.

The project focuses on enhancing the reliability, availability, and operational efficiency of a glycol ethers production unit by improving the existing calandria system. The objective is to significantly extend plant operating cycles between maintenance shutdowns, reducing production interruptions and improving overall asset performance.

Through comprehensive engineering studies and design development, MECIP is supporting the implementation of a safe, reliable, and maintainable solution that aligns with the client’s long-term operational and production objectives.

MECIP’s scope of work encompasses comprehensive process simulation, process adequacy assessments, heat and material balance development, and hydraulic analyses to validate and optimize system performance. The project also includes the engineering assessment and design of new calandria systems and associated process equipment, together with the design of circulation pumps, pressure relief systems, piping modifications, sampling facilities, and control systems.

To ensure safe and reliable operations, the scope incorporates process safety studies including HAZID, HAZOP, hazardous area classification, and fire protection assessments. The multidisciplinary engineering effort covers mechanical, piping, civil and structural, electrical, instrumentation, and corrosion engineering disciplines.

In addition, MECIP is responsible for site verification activities, constructability reviews, tie-in assessments, and integration planning with existing operating facilities, as well as the development of project execution strategies, capital cost estimates, and engineering deliverables to support subsequent project implementation phases
