
Caustic Neutralization Unit 2 (CNU-2) System Upgrade

MECIP successfully delivered Detailed Engineering Design (DED) services for the upgrade of the Caustic Neutralization Unit 2 (CNU-2) at a major refinery complex in Malaysia. The project was undertaken to address evolving operational requirements, improve process efficiency, and enhance the long-term reliability of the refinery’s caustic treatment system.
The scope involved the engineering design and integration of new process equipment, including pumps, control valves, and a hairpin-loop heat exchanger, within an existing operating refinery environment. As a brownfield modification project, extensive engineering assessments and integration studies were performed to ensure seamless implementation while minimizing operational disruption.
A comprehensive process simulation model was developed using Aspen Plus to evaluate operating conditions, optimize system performance, and validate process design requirements. Advanced thermodynamic modelling was conducted utilizing the Electrolyte Non-Random Two-Liquid (ELECNRTL) property package to accurately represent the complex chemical interactions within the caustic neutralization process. In addition, heat exchanger design and performance verification were carried out using HTRI software to ensure thermal efficiency and operational reliability.
MECIP also developed detailed piping and 3D engineering models to support design coordination, constructability reviews, and brownfield integration planning. The project successfully improved system operability, enhanced process performance, and supported the refinery’s commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
